In 1946, Alfred Eisenstaedt, the legendary German photojournalists who rose to fame by capturing some of the world's best-known images, was commissioned by LIFE magazine to document daily campus life at the prestigious Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Howard University.

The 306 Group was a collective of African American artists residing in 1930s Harlem.
Gathering at Charles Alston’s studio loft at the eponymous 306 West 141st Street, its members included
Harlem Renaissance icons, such as Jacob Lawrence, Augusta Savage, and Romare Bearden.
